The VOR Next
Generation
The Next Generation: Siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins of individuals
with mental retardation. VOR is working to involve and mentor this "Next
Generation" group of advocates, many of whom are already fully engaged in their
advocacy work on behalf of their family members with mental retardation. The continuing mission
of VOR's Next Generation: To explore new legislation that affects persons with
mental retardation and to seek out the assistance and support of brothers and
sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins of the persons with mental retardation.

The History of VOR's Next Generation
The
brainchild of Dan Burke, an energetic and farsighted 18-year-old, the group had
its official premiere June 9, 2002, during the VOR Washington initiative. Dan’s older brother resides at the Choate Center, an ICF/MR in
Illinois. Dan’s commitment to his
brother’s ongoing care and the realization that his parents won’t be around
forever prompted him to seek out other “next generationers” and form an
ad-hoc network, which culminated in the group’s formal debut in DC.
All
