VOR History Project - address for submissions, details, etc.
2 Great Story Submissions Not sure what to contribute? Click on the stories submitted about Anne Golden and Jimmy Janazzo. These stories, submitted by their parents, illustrate outstanding examples of what the author is looking for. They provide an overview of their mentally retarded children's lives, as well as their contributions to MR/DD advocacy - including but not limited to their advocacy for VOR.
A note from the author about these stories First and foremost, these 2 stories from Sam (about Anne Golden) and Fanny (about Jimmy J.) are incredible: astounding and perfect. Both stories are exactly what I thinks will be crucial for informing the public about advocacy and VOR. However, both Sam and Fanny hopefully can add to these stories by filling in dates, times, & chronology of involvement in VOR (and other organizations along the way): advocacy, chairmanships, presidencies, visits to officials, and legislators. This is not a time for humility for those courageous and exceptional things and activities that all these marvelous parents (all of them) have done and been involved with. Tell us the things you’ve accomplished (pat yourselves on the back). To the best of your recollection, we need times and dates and chronology of grass roots political adventures, along with these marvelous familial stories of their loved ones to make the whole thing fit together. What other fellow parents got involved and when (give names) and with what collaborations of ideas took place? (i.e.: Why did Fanny’s husband start a workshop? What need did he see? What experiences led him to do the things he did along the way?) Obviously the continuous loving and caring and nurturing of their loved ones, and needing help to do it, and finding none, got them active to fill these vacuums of much needed human services. These are just some suggestions for other writers and contributors to this project. By the way, all of the stories, though having many similarities, will be absolutely unique, and will have personal aspects that are heart wrenching as these 2 stories are, but also profoundly delightful and heart warming. With thanks in advance for your participation. I look forward to hearing from all of you! /s/ Deb Gilbert Deb Gilbert
