VOR Weekly E-Mail Update

1. Siblings and VOR
--------------------------------
VOR recognizes that siblings and other extended family members are VOR's
"next generation" of leaders and members. We have made a concerted effort
in recent years to get siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews involved as
donors, members, and volunteers. In all three categories we've had some
success, but certainly we've met up against the expected challenges of
involving this next generation, including careers and kids.
We continue to watch for opportunities, however, to develop the potential
of our "next generation."At VOR's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. (June
10), for example, we are honored to include two very, very active siblings
on the agenda - Bill Choslovsky and Tom Frain. Both have assumed leadership
positions within their family organizations and both can cite the success
their organizations have had in enlisting siblings (as members and
leaders). We expect to learn from them, and be inspired by them, this June.
With this issue of the Weekly E-Mail Update, we share an opportunity to
have adult siblings contribute to a national survey on their experiences as
a sibling of a person with mental retardation.
PLEASE DISTRIBUTE this VOR Update to other adult siblings in your circles
of family and friends, and along with sharing the survey, encourage VOR
membership and/or participation in VOR's Annual Meeting and/or Washington
Initiative. A registration form, which can also be used as a membership or
donation form is provided at the end of this update.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

We know surprisingly little about the relationship between individuals with
disabilities and their adult siblings.
To better understand this long-lasting relationship, we have created the
"Adult Sibling Questionnaire" for anyone age 18 or over with a sister or
brother with disabilities.
The Adult Sibling Questionnaire has questions in the following general
areas:
*You
*Your Sibling with Disabilities
*Your Family
*Joint Activities and Involvement
*Support Needs of Brother/Sister
*Your Health and Well-Being
*Reflections on Your Relationship with your Brother/Sister
The questionnaire should take 20-25 minutes to complete, all answers are
anonymous, and participation is voluntary.
A summary of the results of the questionnaire will be provided to those who
request it. In addition, the findings will be presented at The Arc National
Convention, October 12-14, 2006 in San Diego, and in The Arc's newsletter,
InSight, and other publications and scientific journals.
If you are 18 years of age or older and have a brother or sister with
disabilities, please participate!
The online version of the questionnaire is at

Paper copies are also available. Call or email your contact information
